The list of items needed for the process is long, but it doesn’t have to be. The materials you’ll need are pretty basic, but you’ll find items such as Elmer’s glue and soda-lime glass in most craft stores. Glass slumping molds are also essential. They should be able to withstand high temperatures. A sharpie is also useful. And a kiln is of course necessary for a successful glass fusing.
Elmer’s glue:
When you are making fused glass, you can use a variety of materials to glue the pieces together. You can use diluted PVA glue, Elmer’s glue, or Bullseye product “Glastac.” A popular alternative is hair spray, which dries instantly and forms a thin film of adhesive. Hair spray also burns off completely in the kiln without leaving any residue. Make sure to choose glue without additives, as they can damage the glass.
Soda-lime glass:
Soda-lime glass is a common material for a variety of glass products. It is typically made through a wet batch process and is composed of sixty to seventy percent silica, twelve to eighteen percent soda, and 5% to 12% lime. It can also contain small amounts of other materials, such as iron pyrite or chrome flour. If you’re looking for a blue-colored glass container, this might be the right choice.
Elmer’s sharpie:
Using an Elmer’s Sharpie is a great way to add detail to your fused glass projects. These pens are acid free, permanent, and non-toxic and come in a variety of sizes, including calligraphy points. For added detail, consider using a black pen instead of a white one. After completing your fused glass piece, add a coat of clear varnish to protect it.
Kiln:
A kiln is an essential component of glass fusing. It’s used to fire glass into a variety of shapes, including mosaics, abstracts, and even sculptural works. The stuff that’s fused into the glass is called kiln glass, and the process can result in anything from paintings and sculptures to sculptures and objects that would otherwise be impossible to produce.
